  • PELS Ph.D. Thesis Talk (P3 Talk)

    Eligibility: All Ph.D. graduates across the world who defended their thesis and have their Ph.D., doctoral certificate, or proof of a final thesis defense after 31 March of the year preceding the award are eligible.  All applicants must be either an IEEE PELS Student or Regular Member.  As a prerequisite for eligibility, the applicant submitting a video must express the consent that the video may be published by the PELS and assures that it does not contain otherwise copyrighted or confidential material.  Previous participants are NOT eligible.

    Presentation: Five P3 Talks will be awarded each year.  A ceremony will be organized to present the award, either online or at a PELS-sponsored conference.

    Award Items (per presenter):

    • Certificate
    • A one-time monetary award of USD 1,000
    • The presentation featured on PELS website

    Ph.D. Thesis Talk Topics: The topic of the Ph.D. thesis should be in one of the focus areas of the PELS.  Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

    • Electrical energy storage
    • Energy conversion for Information Technology and communication systems
    • Energy efficiency for residential, commercial, and industrial applications
    • Energy harvesting
    • EMI and EMC
    • High power/voltage power conversion
    • High voltage isolation and lightning strike protection
    • Lighting applications and displays
    • Modeling and control of components, converters, and systems
    • Passive components and materials
    • Power conversion topologies, modulation, and control
    • Power electronic devices (Si and wide bandgap) and applications
    • Power electronic packaging, integration, and advanced manufacturing
    • Reliability, diagnostics, prognostics, and health management
    • Renewable and alternative energy
    • Rotating/linear electro-mechanical devices and drive systems
    • Smart grids, micro-grids, and utility applications
    • Thermal management, advanced cooling technologies
    • Transportation electrification
    • Wireless power transfer (WPT)

    Judging Phase               15 May – 30 June 2023

    Submitting an Application: The entire submission should be in English and summarize the Ph.D. research.  The video should be up to three minutes in length.  It can either be uploaded into the submission or a link can be provided.  Submissions will require the following information:

    • Name (contact info)
    • University/Institute
    • IEEE Membership Number
    • Date of Graduation
    • Proof of Ph.D. Defense/Degree*
    • Thesis Title
    • Brief abstract (less than 200 words)
    • Keywords (three to five)

    All submissions must be through the OpenWater platform, which will require an IEEE Account to log in.  The online form will save automatically to your account and can be resumed at any time.  All submissions received will be evaluated by at least three worldwide distinguished judges.  Judges will be asked to score the video submissions according to the problem definition, design methodology, achieved outcomes, quality of the video, and presentation.

    *Translation of the certificate/diploma or a proof letter from either the University/Institute or Ph.D. advisor may be required.
